On Saturday, January 17, Agreement under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biological Diversity of Areas beyond National Jurisdiction, the BBNJ Agreement, the first international treaty providing a legally binding framework for the conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction, entered into force, marking a key moment for multilateral cooperation and ocean governance.
The Environmental Politics Research Group has worked on this agreement through field work, workshops and through establishing the MARIPOLDATAbase, making the progress and interactions of the negotiations available for researchers everwhere. Currently our doctoral researcher Wenwen Lyu is analyzing the institutional design and negotiations in her doctoral reserach.
